Joe graduated from Logan High in 1972. He received a BA in History from Carleton College in Minnesota in 1976. At Carleton, Joe met Sandra Secrest of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Joe and Sandy married and moved to Salt Lake City in 1977. Joe received a law degree in 1980 and an MBA in 1982, both from the University of Utah. Joe has been a sole practitioner since 1989 specializing in real property and labor law, currently operating a private law practice.
Sandy became one of the first women to be licensed as an architect in Utah. She has had her own architectural practice since 1989. They are the proud parents of two adult sons; Robert Hatch and William Hatch. Robert graduated from Judge High School in 2001 and holds a BA in Economics from Boston College in 2005. Currently he works as an economic analyst in Boston. William graduated from East High in 2006 and is currently a junior at Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona.
Joe has been a long time activist for tolerance, diversity, economic justice, and environmental issues. He has been a member of the County Council since 2001 and currently serves as its chairman. Joe serves on the Labor Commission’s appeal board, and has been a past member of the boards of the Hogle Zoo, the Science & Technology Museum, and the Cancer Wellness House. He was the Chairman of the Salt Lake County Democratic Party from 1995 to 1999. Presently, Joe serves on the Board of Trustees of the Salt Lake Film Center.
